Dean of Syrian Detainees

The hero Sudqi al-Maqt is an example to be followed by all freedom fighters all over the world. Al-Maqt has been defying all the racist oppressive measures  taken by the Israeli forces of occupation with the aim of bringing him to his knees and end his resistance, steadfastness and loyalty to his people and homeland.  The Zionist regime has aggravated its repressive measures against al-Maqt and his colleagues, because of his role in disclosing the relationship between the armed terrorist groups operating in Syria and the Zionist entity and the unlimited support offered by the Israeli government to terrorists, especially weapons and medical equipment. The new unfair sentence against the Syrian prisoner al-Maqt is the subsequent of his role in unveiling the involvement of the Israeli occupation authorities in providing arms, health services and financial support to the armed terrorist groups, particularly Jabhat al-Nusra, in Syria.

On October 9th, 2018, the so-called Israeli High Court of Justice issued a verdict which supports al-Jalil Court’s sentence of 14-years imprisonment against the dean of the Syrian and Arab detainees in the Israeli jails, Sudqi al-Maqt, from Majdal Shams town in the occupied Syrian Golan who was re-detained by the Israeli authorities on February 25th, 2015, after he had already spent 27 years in Israeli prisons without any moral or legal justification.

The sentence constitutes a new legal scandal to be added to Israeli entity’s long record of war crimes and violations of the international law and the international humanitarian law and international human rights law as well as the UN Security Council Resolution No. 497 which prevents Israeli entity from taking punitive measures against the Syrians in the occupied Syrian Golan.

The issuance of that unfair verdict against the hero al-Maqt is considered as a null illegal sentence since it was issued by an occupation authority against a Syrian civilian who lives under the rule of foreign occupation.

The UN Secretary General, the UNSC, the Higher Commission for Human Rights and all concerned international humanitarian organizations, including the international Committee of the Red Cross, should force the Israeli authorities to immediately release al-Maqt without any conditions since the unfair Israeli decision flagrantly contradicts with the rights of Syrians living under the Israeli occupation and the principle of justice which should be preserved in all places and at all times. The concerned international bodies should implement provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the international humanitarian law on the Arab territories occupied by the Israeli entity, including the occupied Syrian Golan, stressing rejection of Israeli mock trials of prisoners.

Al-Maqt affirmed his determination to continue his struggle against Israeli occupation and its terrorist mercenaries from Jabhat al-Nusra, pledging to remain loyal to Syria. He refuted all the charges leveled against him, affirming that they are completely baseless and contradict facts, which proves incontrovertibly the coordination and cooperation between the Israeli occupation authorities and terrorist groups affiliated to Jabhat al-Nusra.

Al-Maqt, who is imprisoned in Gilboa prison, said after the conclusion of the fake trial which was held in secret behind closed doors, that baseless accusations desperately seek to hide the Israeli support for terrorists in Syria.

He stressed his insistence on exposing the facts about the occupation authorities’ involvement in the shedding of the Syrians’ blood and the destruction of infrastructure and national economy to weaken the components of the Syrian state, saying that he is determined to continue telling the truth even if that would cost him his life.

The sentence was an act of reprisal that is based on no evidence , and is fundamentally politicized and contrary to the basic human rights and rules of international law. The international human rights organizations should exert pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to stop their aggressive and oppression policies against the people of the occupied Golan and to annul the unjust and inhumane decision against al-Maqt.

Al-Maqt, a resident and freedom-fighter in the Israeli-occupied Golan, served the longest prison sentence in Israeli jails. He was re-detained by the Israeli authorities on February 25th, 2015, after he had already spent 27 years in Israeli prisons and was released in August 2012.

This disgraceful criminal act came within the Israeli occupation authorities’ continued crimes against the Syrian civilians who still suffer under the yoke of the Israeli occupation in the occupied Syrian Golan.

The new unjust measure against al-Maqt is meant to punish him for revealing the close relationship between the Israeli occupation and the terrorist organizations in Syria, on the top of which are Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS, indicating that the Israeli courts refused to publish the real causes for arresting al-Maqt and kept all relevant information in a secret file.
