Seyyed Ali Khamenei: preventing arms flow into Syria the only solution to the crisis

TEHRAN, (ST) _ The Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei reiterated Iran’s firm stance on the Syria issue, warning of plots by arrogant powers to break anti-Israel resistance by targeting Syria.

“The reality of the Syria issue is that the arrogant front intends to eliminate the connecting link of the anti-Israel resistance chain in the region which is located in the neighborhood of the Zionist usurper regime,” Press TV quoted Ayatollah Khamenei  as saying on Monday.

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined preventing arms flow into Syria as the only solution to the  crisis in Syria, asserting that it is natural for any government to counter the opposition when they receive arms from outside the country.

Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that if the Syrian opposition groups laid down their arms, it would be possible for them to demand the government to hear their views and allow them to express their positions.

Yesterday, the two-day conference on Syria with the slogan of "Violence No, Democracy Yes" concluded its works in  Tehran, calling for a ceasefire and an end to the armed conflicts, rejecting any foreign interference in the domestic affairs of Syria.

The participants in the conference created a 16-member committee as to follow-up the agreements concluded during the conference deliberations.

West is not a true supporter of regional people: Iranian official

TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has advised Western countries to provide sincere support to the people of the region instead of chanting empty slogans.

Mehmanparast made the remarks during an interview with the Tehran Times on the sidelines of the Syrian national dialogue meeting, which was held in Tehran on Sunday, in reply to a question about the fact that France on Saturday welcomed Mounzir Makhous, a member of the new Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, as the country’s ambassador.

Mehmanparast stated, “The measures of Western countries mostly amount to interference in the internal affairs of regional countries. They have proved in practice that they are not truly seeking to support the rights of the people of regional countries.

“If they had been the true advocates of regional people, they should not have maintained silence on and condoned the Zionist regime’s crimes being committed against the defenseless and innocent people of Palestine and Gaza.”

“Therefore, we regard as an insincere the intention of the Western countries which fan the flames of violence, extremism, and terrorism and make efforts to send weapons to Syria in every way possible and make decisions for the Syrian people. And we advise them to provide a sincere support to people instead of interfering in the affairs of Middle East and regional countries,” Mehmanparast stated.

He also said that in Syria, “Violence should be stopped and the people should express their demands in an election held under proper conditions.”

Europe seeking to justify interference in regional countries

Mehmanparast also replied to a question about the fact that British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced on Friday that European Union members were discussing whether to overturn an arms embargo on Syria, which was adopted in May 2011.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “Basically, we think that the countries supporting the Zionist regime are responsible for instability in Syria and in the region. They have always been seeking various pretexts to justify their presence (in) and their interference in the internal affairs of regional countries.”

Their claims of support for the people of regional countries are false, he added.

Iran seeks a peaceful solution to crisis in Syria, says Salehi

TEHRAN (ST)-The participants of the Syrian national dialogue meeting, which was held in Tehran on Sunday, emphasized the importance of a halt to the violence in Syria.

The announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi during a press conference held after a closed-door meeting.

About 200 Syrian citizens, including religious leaders, party leaders, political figures, tribal chiefs, and representatives of Syrian opposition groups, as well as representatives from Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, and a number of other countries, attended the meeting, which was held on the theme of “No to Violence, Yes to Democracy.”

During the press conference, Salehi said that Iran “is seeking a peaceful Syrian-Syrian solution without foreign interference.”

Salehi stated that it was agreed that “a follow-up committee to be established. It was also agreed that members of the follow-up committee, with their own agreement, be chosen from among their intellectuals and a number of people who represent various groups.”

“The follow-up committee is supposed to pursue the issue of national dialogue and promote national dialogue among other groups that were invited, but unfortunately did not attend for their own reasons, and we respect their reasons and justifications,” he added.

In addition, Salehi said that the participants of the meeting emphasized that Syria’s independence, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity should be respected.

They also stated that support should be provided to the Syrian people and Syria’s borders should be controlled, Salehi noted.

The Iranian foreign minister also announced that a number of relevant meetings will be held on Monday.

Salehi also warned against sending weapons to Syrian armed groups, affirming   that this would threaten regional stability and increase the ‘risk of terrorism’.

“Some countries envisage arming the opposition with heavy and semi-heavy arms,” Salehi said.

“In reality, they seek to legitimize publicly what they have been doing in secret,” Salehi said, without naming any country.

Ramin Mehmanparast ,the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman ,expressed hope that the Syrian national dialogue meeting would pave the way for the fulfillment of the demands of the Syrian people.

Speaking to the Tehran Times on the sidelines of the meeting, Mehmanparast said, “The meeting that was held today is a starting point for national dialogue between representatives of various walks of life and government representatives.”

Iran hopes that the meeting will produce good results for the Syrian people and pave the way for the fulfillment of their demands through a democratic process, the Foreign Ministry official noted.
